About Flinders University

About Flinders University

Flinders University is an integral part of Australia's respected higher education system and makes an important economic and social contribution to South Australia and to the nation.

Flinders has a high research profile and consistently ranks among Australia's top universities on a per capita basis for research.

Established in 1966, in a period of significant expansion of higher education in Australia, we have grown to become a model for a modern university – successful, progressive and dynamic yet still friendly and accessible.

We emphasise innovation and excellence in our educational programs and research across a wide range of disciplines.

Flinders is steadily expanding its international profile and has increasing numbers of onshore and offshore students who come from over 80 countries.

Teaching and learning

Flinders provides a high quality teaching and learning environment. While there is a strong focus on regular direct contact between staff and students, many courses use new information and communication technologies to supplement face-to-face teaching and provide flexible options .

The University was recognised for an ‘innovative and practical approach' to teaching in winning an institutional award through the Australian Awards for University Teaching in 2001, and individual awards in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007, including the University Teacher of the Year Award in 2004 and 2006.

Access and equity

Flinders has a strong commitment to access and equity, with schemes to encourage and support students from all backgrounds.

For more information, refer to Special entry.

Research profile

Flinders is a leading research university. We earn more than $23m per annum in research income.

Along with continued success in gaining external funding for fundamental curiosity-driven research, Flinders has increased its engagement with industry and other community sectors, resulting in projects of a more applied and commercial nature.

We have a strong emphasis on research collaboration across disciplines.

 Community engagement

Flinders draws on its breadth of academic and professional knowledge and expertise in its business and community-oriented activities.

We are active in local and regional areas, and in statewide, national and international projects and collaborations with the aim of delivering benefits to individuals, groups, organisations and communities.

Strategic alliances

Carnegie Mellon University

Flinders University, Carnegie Mellon University, from Pittsburgh USA and the State of South Australia signed a three-way agreement in 2005, confirming a significant new partnership.

Flinders Institute of Public Policy and Management and the Carnegie Mellon John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management will collaborate in their postgraduate courses and research to bring benefits to students and staff and to the State.

TAFE SA

Flinders University and TAFE SA have entered into a further five-year period of close cooperation to maintain and extend flexible study options for South Australians thanks to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two institutions.

The new MOU will continue the formal agreement between Flinders and TAFE SA that covers cooperation across areas such as credit transfer, program delivery, research and development, marketing, strategic planning and professional development.

Flinders has formed a strong alliance with similar universities across Australia's mainland states.
